What is a Tequila Sunrise?
A tequila sunrise is a classic cocktail that, with it’s ombre from red on the bottom to orange on top, literally looks like a sunrise over the desert. The red comes from grenadine. The orange comes from, well, orange juice. And, the booze comes from tequila. Duh.
Where Was The Tequila Sunrise Invented?
A tequila sunrise is actually a cocktail that was born out of the prohibition, like most cocktails were. Seriously, America, prohibition doesn’t work! Anyway, the sunrise inspired cocktail was first invented at a resort in Tijuana called Agua Caliente and original used creme de cassis instead of grenadine. SoCal residents could easily go down there to party, gamble, and legally get loaded on tequila cocktails.
Now let’s get in our TARDIS and head on over to 1960’s America to an establishment named The Trident in Sausalito California when The Rolling Stones were in town. That’s where they first tasted the version of the tequila sunrise using grenadine that is popular today. They loved it so much that they took it on tour with them and. later in life, Keith Richards would refer to the Stone’s ’72 tour as the “Cocaine and Tequila Sunrise Tour”. Since this isn’t a cocaine blog, I’m just going to cover tequila.

Later the Eagles would jump on the band wagon with their 1973 hit “Tequila Sunrise”
What Kind Of Tequila Do I Use In A Tequila Sunrise Mimosa?
Usually no one gets too specific about the tequila in a tequila sunrise because it’s a low brow drink and they think it doesn’t matter. Well, let me tell you that it does matter. For this tequila sunrise mimosa I use tequila reposado, which is barrel aged in oak casks for up to 364 days. Yes, you read that right. A day later and the tequila is technically tequila anejo (one year). Reposado has notes of oak and vanilla and using it in a tequila sunrise mimosa adds so much depth to a simple cocktail.
What Kind Of Champagne Do you Use In A Mimosa?
Picking the right champagne for a mimosa is important. You’re mixing with orange juice, which is sweet. You need to balance the sweet with something a bit drier, which is why I’d reach for brut champagne to put in a mimosa.
Let’s Start Making Some Brunch Cocktails!
Pour 1 ounce of reposado tequila into a champagne flute. Fill the flute halfway with champagne. Add 1/4 cup (2 ounces) of orange juice and top with a splash grenadine. The grenadine will sink to the bottom creating that sunrise effect.
