Sbagliato!

Saluti Amici! Have I got a cocktail for you! It’s the perfect beverage for any holiday celebration, shower, or brunch. It’s called the sbagliato (pronounced sba-yah-to) negroni; a variation on the classic negroni, which is 1 part Campari, 1 part sweet vermouth, and 1 part gin. It’s an easy drinking apertif to share with friends!

BUT!

But! There’s a big difference between the Sbagliato and the Classic Negroni. According to legend, which is posted on Campari’s website:

In 1972, Mirko Stocchetto at the Bar Basso in Milan added sparkling wine instead of the gin by mistake to a Negroni. He then realized that this variation had some sense and this humble mistake led to the creation of a classic cocktail that is still enjoyed all around the world today, and to its name: in fact, in Italian “sbagliato” means mistaken. Ideal for those who want to enjoy a few “bubbles” without having to forget the classic sharp Negroni taste they know and love.

Basically a sbagliato is a happy accident. When the bartender mistakenly added prosecco to a negroni, he created a deliciously sweet, slightly bitter, and infinitely refreshing cocktail that’s perfect for any occasion. In fact, gentleman, do you want to impress your brunch date with your knowledge of cocktails? Go off menu and order the two of you a sbagliato. Most likely, the hipster bartender would have no idea what it is and you’d have to explain it and its origin story. She’ll be taken by your suave move and she’ll be won over when she tastes this drink. It’s a win-win!

Versatile

Voveti-Sbagliato-Negroni

Alright, cats. I’ve been tasked by Voveti to create a holiday themed cocktail using their brut style DOC prosecco. It’s tempered acidity and fresh, graceful profile make it suitable to mix with almost anything. It also goes well with sushi, charcuterie, and (what’s surprising to me) Thai curry. Personally, I love prosecco as a cooking wine because it’s usually inexpensive and incredibly flavorful. Just substitute it for any recipe that calls for white wine.

Voveti Sbagliato Negroni

Alright, so let’s make this salacious sbagliato. Fill a rocks glass with ice. I used a large ice ball because it melts slower and ball shaped ice is just more delicious. That’s a scientific fact. (no it’s not) Then just add 1 ounce of Campari, 1 ounce of sweet vermouth, and top with Voveti prosecco and stir and garnish with a blood orange slice. That’s it. You can even mix the Campari and sweet vermouth ahead of time, just remember the 1:1 ratio.

Now you have all you need to bring a sbagliato to your next party!
