Erin Go Braugh!

Alright, mates, St. Patrick’s Day is this week and you know what that means?

Leprechaun

Don’t Take His Gold!

Well, your town is going to devolve into a drunken bar crawl so I say, “If you can’t beat em, join em!” Let’s start the day off with a boozy breakfast of Irish Soda Bread French Toast. There’s Bailey’s Irish cream in it!

Yeah, Bro! Let’s Go Braugh, Bro!

So we’re gonna start the day with french toast. The trick to good french toast is soaking the bread for a while so that the bread absorbs the egg throughout. If you do this with regular sandwich bread, it’s going to fall apart and keep that from happening, great french toast is usually made from a good, thick, dense bread; like challah. It also helps if the bread has lost some of it’s moisture and has gone a bit stale. Hey, did you know that in France, french toast is called pain perdu? It Literally translates to ‘lost bread’ and is called that because soaking it in eggs and milk is a great way to save that bread!

Anyway, what’s another thick, dense, bread? Irish Soda Bread!

What Even Is Irish Soda Bread? Is it Made With Coca Cola?

No! But it is made with soda! Bicarbonate of Soda! Or, as we here in the States call it, baking soda! Baking soda is used as a leavening agent to make the dough rise instead of yeast.

So, Where Can You Get Irish Soda Bread?

It’s seasonal and usually shows up in grocery stores and bakeries around St. Patty’s day. You could also try making it yourself. It’s not hard.

That’s What She Said!

Side note, that’s what she said jokes were created by men to boast about their sexual prowess and are only funny when you turn the misogyny on its head. For example: “It’s so tiny!” “That’s what she said” “Wow that was quick!” “That’s what she said” “It’s not hard.” “That’s what she said”

Anyway, back to bread. You can buy it at the store or you could make it yourself. Here are some recipes for Irish Soda Bread:

Let’s start making some french toast! Slice the whole loaf into 3/4 inch thick slices and let the slices sit out overnight. Now, imagine it’s the next morning, you’re tired you’ve just poured some coffee. You’ve just read the latest ridiculous thing Donald Trump has done and you need a drink. Well, break out that Bailey’s and spike your coffee! Feeling better? Good!

Now that you’re a little buzzed, get a mixing bowl and crack 4 large eggs into and beat them. Then add the Bailey’s Irish Cream, light brown sugar, freshly ground cinnamon, and nutmeg and whisk some more. Pour the mixture into a 9 x 13 roasting pan and place the slices of bread in a single layer and let soak for 10 minutes. Flip the bread and soak the other side for 10 more minutes.

We’re about ready to get cooking. You either need a griddle, or a large heavy bottomed skillet. I prefer a cast iron skillet because it’s easiest to clean. Set your skillet over medium heat and preheat for about 5 minutes. Melt a tablespoon of butter in the pan and as many slices of toast as you can fit without over crowding. Cook for 3 minutes for 3 minutes on one side 2 minutes more on the other. Serve hot with fresh fruit, maple syrup, or honey.

Oh Crap!

Something just dawned on me. I should have added crumbled bacon on top. I guess I got mad F.O.M.B.

  4. Haha – FOMB – Fear of Missed Bacon! Honestly, I think this looks absolutely scrumptious just as it is – so much creamy, flavorful goodness from the Bailey’s, not to mention the spices and the yummy starting base of the soda bread itself! So easy, too – love that!

  13. Ok. That leprechaun picture kind of scared me. Especially after that wonderfully divine picture of your french toast…I was happily scrolling down…then bam! Well played. I will make this french toast if only to reward myself for surviving that awful awful moment (and also because it has Baileys in it).
